Raleigh, N.C., and Schaumburg, Ill. (Nov. 27, 2018) – The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) are co-sponsoring a FAER/ABA Research in Education Grant to advance the careers and knowledge of anesthesiologists interested in the key elements of education in anesthesiology—curriculum, instruction and assessment.
“The goal of this grant is to provide anesthesiologists with a robust research project related to graduate medical education and physician lifelong learning,” said Deborah J. Culley, M.D., secretary of the ABA. “Our hope is that grant recipients will benefit from the research experience and that their work product will provide valuable insight that helps us to elevate standards of practice, guide physicians’ lifelong learning and advance the specialty.”
Applicants will be asked to submit an abstract for a prospective hypothesis-driven research project that evaluates the following elements of ABA board certification:
- The value of primary certification and the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology™ program (MOCA®) to clinicians and the public, or
- The validity and impact of the ABA’s new primary certification program – the staged examination process (BASIC, ADVANCED, and APPLIED Examinations).
“This partnership provides a unique and incredible opportunity for career development in education research while at the same time generating important new information on how Board certification and continuing education impact practitioners and their care of patients,” said Dr. James C. Eisenach, FAER president and CEO. “The ABA is a creative leader in making informed decisions on its processes and this joint grant will further the missions of both FAER and the ABA.”
The ABA and FAER will award one $100,000 grant, to be distributed over two years, to a faculty member of any rank. The grant requires that 40 percent of the faculty member’s time be dedicated to the proposed research.
The application process will open on Dec. 1, 2018, and the deadline is Feb. 15, 2019. Applicants will be asked to submit a one-page research abstract, a career development plan, a biosketch, letters of support, and a proposed budget. The grant recipient will be announced in May 2019, and the grant period will begin in July 2019.
The ABA will provide the grant recipient with mentoring and access to ABA Board resources, which may include de-identified physician data, data analysis expertise and other tools necessary to design, conduct and report the project. The grantee may also pursue primary data collection based on their research question.
